For the past 40 years Matthew Girling has lived and breathed jewellery. In a career that has taken him to all the world’s jewellery capitals – London, Geneva, New York and Hong Kong – he has valued an extraordinary range of jewellery, from gemstones of the highest quality to historic jewels. Over this period, he has built up a broad network of private and professional clients who have relied on him for his expert advice on the sale and purchase of their collections.

Matthew’s career has involved working for both Christie’s and Bonhams. At Bonhams he was International Group Head of Jewellery for fifteen years, expanding the sales more than twenty-fold in that period and achieving some world-record prices along the way. He created and led the teams in New York and Hong Kong, thereby establishing the brand as a global market player. As a taste-maker, he inaugurated new sales and established new collecting categories, with particular focus on leading twentieth-century designers.

Matthew has conducted auctions all over the world. In 2018 he was recognised as one of the top five auctioneers globally (The Times newspaper).

Matthew qualified as a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1981.
